A NEW CREATION – IN CHRIST!
Every person who truly believes on the Work of Christ on the cross is a new creation.
2 Cor 5:17 NIV Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
2 Cor 5:17 NLT What this means is that those who become Christians become new persons. They are not the same anymore, for the old life is gone. A new life has begun!
They are declared by God’s Word to be IN CHRIST.
ONCE WE WERE:
- Gentiles!
- Uncircumcised (in heart)!
- Separated from Christ – distant from God
- Excluded from citizenship in Israel
- Foreigners to the covenants (of promise)!
- Without HOPE and
- Without GOD – (in this world)!
Eph 2:11-15 NIV Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (that done in the body by the hands of men)– {12} remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. {13} But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. {14} For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, {15} by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace,
NOW WE ARE:
- We are brought NEAR to God
- Jew and Gentile made ONE
- The wall of division and hostility is NOW BROKEN DOWN
- PEACE has been established
- The law of commandments and regulations have been DONE AWAY WITH
- ONE NEW MAN – A NEW CREATION MAN – THE MAN IN CHRIST
- WE ARE NEW CREATIONS (PEOPLE)
WE WERE! – WE ARE NOW!
1 Cor 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. (NKJ)
WE WERE IN ADAM BUT: WE ARE NOW IN CHRIST
1 Corinthians 15:22 – AS – IN ADAM even SO – IN CHRIST
WE ARE NOW IN CHRIST
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any is in Christ (has been born again) he is (now) a new creation. The old has (not ‘may be’, but HAS) passed away. Behold (look with careful attention) the new has come.
WHAT ADVANTAGE – BEING A JEW OR GENTILE?
NONE:
- Gal 6:15 NIV Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is a new creation.
- Gal 6:15 AMP For neither is circumcision [now] of any importance, nor uncircumcision, but [only] a new creation [the result of a new birth and a new nature in Christ Jesus, the Messiah].
- Gal 6:15 TEV It does not matter at all whether or not one is circumcised; what does matter is being a new creature.
BUT BEING A NEW CREATION DOES GIVE YOU ADVANTAGE WITH GOD
CIRCUMCISION OF THE HEART!
- Rom 2:29 TLB No, a real Jew is anyone whose heart is right with God. For God is not looking for those who cut their bodies in actual body circumcision, but he is looking for those with changed hearts and minds. Whoever has that kind of change in his life will get his praise from God, even if not from you.
JUSTIFIED BY FAITH – JEW OR GENTILE!
- Rom 3:30 NIV since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith.
- Rom 3:30 TLB God treats us all the same; all, whether Jews or Gentiles, are acquitted if they have faith.
CIRCUMCISION WAS A SEAL OF THE RIGHTEOUSNESS GIVEN TO ABRAHAM – BY GOD – IN RESPONSE TO FAITH
- Rom 4:11 NIV And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is the father of all who believe but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them.
- Pleasing God is what advantages the believer before him.
- Pleasing God is the expression of the new creation man – the man in Christ.
- 1 Cor 7:19 TLB For it doesn’t make any difference at all whether a Christian has gone through this ceremony or not. But it makes a lot of difference whether he is pleasing God and keeping God’s commandments. That is the important thing.
- 1 Cor 7:19 KJV Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God.
THERE IS NO ADVANTAGE IN – CIRCUMCISION, OR CIRCUMCISION
- Expressing Christ’s love is evidence of being a new creation.
- Here in is the true circumcision of the Spirit (heart).
- Gal 5:6 KJV For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor circumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
- Gal 5:6 NIV) For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor circumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.
NEW CREATION MAN DOES NOT PUT ANY TRUST IN THE FLESH. (the carnal man – the natural man).
- The new creation man is not boastful or self promoting.
- Is not over confident in ones self. always understanding (in varying degrees) the need for dependence on God and his ability)
- The new creation man depends on God and His spirit, power and wisdom
- Phil 3:3 NIV For it is we who are the circumcision, we who worship by the Spirit of God, who glory in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh
THE OLD SINFUL NATURE (FLESH) IS ‘PUT OFF’ DIVEST (ones self of)
- Col 2:11 NIV In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ, “nature”: Or <the flesh>
- Col 2:11 TEV In union with Christ you were circumcised, not with the circumcision that is made by men, but with the circumcision made by Christ, which consists of being freed from the power of this sinful self.
- Col 2:11 KJV In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
- GOD ONLY SEES the “new creation man” – the man in Christ.
- THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE between races and people of differing ethnic backgrounds.
- CHRIST IS IN ALL BELIEVERS no matter what nationality.
- Col 3:11 NIV Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.
- Col 3:11 TLB In this new life one’s nationality or race or education or social position is unimportant; such things mean nothing. Whether a person has Christ is what matters, and he is equally available to all.
IT IS CHRIST IN YOU AND IN ME!
- The riches of this glorious mystery.
- The mystery of Christ in the gentiles (as well as the Jews)
- Col 1:27 KJV To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:
- It is referred to as A MYSTERY because it is not fully known how this can be.
BUT
- WE DO KNOW THE NATURE of the mystery
- IT IS CHRIST living in the believer
- CHRIST LIVING IN ME – US
NOTE – THE REFERENCES TO CHRIST in the book of Ephesians
45 times in 42 verses refer to him
Christ IS THE FOCAL POINT FOR THE BELIEVER in relation to God.
THE MYSTERY = CHRIST IN US!
THE MYSTERY CAME BY REVELATION.
V3. that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation
Eph 3:1-12 NIV – 1 For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles—
2 Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to me for you, 3 that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly. 4 In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to men in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets. 6 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus. 7 I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power. 8 Although I am less than the least of all God’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. 10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, 11 according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.
IT WAS NOT KNOWN BEFORE.
V5 which was not made known to men in other generations
THAT THE GENTILES SHOULD BE:
- FELLOW HEIRS – (heirs together)
V6 the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel,
- MEMBERS of the SAME BODY – (brothers / sisters)
V6 the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel,
- BENEFACTORS OF GOD’S PROMISE in Christ – through the gospel (Literally brought about by the Gospel) V6 sharers together in the promise
- UNSEARCHABLE RICHES of Christ
V8 the unsearchable riches of Christ
- PREVIOUSLY HIDDEN!
V9 which for ages past was kept hidden in God,
- THIS IS PART OF HIS ETERNAL PURPOSE FOR US in Christ Jesus
V11 according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ
- IT IS BEING IN HIM and THROUGH FAITH IN HIM WE HAVE:
V12 In him and through faith in him
- ACCESS & BOLDNESS BEFORE GOD
V12 we may approach God with freedom and confidence.
CHRIST LIVES IN ME!
- Gal 2:20 KJV I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
- Gal 2:20 AMP I have been crucified with Christ [in Him I have shared His crucifixion]; it is no longer I who live, but Christ (the Messiah) lives in me; and the life I now live in the body I live by faith in (by adherence to and reliance on and complete trust in) the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
- Gal 2:20 TLB I have been crucified with Christ: and I myself no longer live, but Christ lives in me. And the real life I now have within this body is a result of my trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
THE HIDDEN LIFE OF THE BELIEVER
- The OLD MAN is CRUCIFIED.
- The NEW MAN is LIVING!
- BODY OF SIN IS DONE AWAY WITH.
- NO LONGER SLAVES OF THE SINFUL NATURE
- GRACE is QUICKENED
- GRACE PRODUCES this work.
- The NEW MAN enjoys the COMFORTS & the TRIUMPHS of GRACE.
- This GRACE is not from man, but FROM ANOTHER.
- Living in A STATE OF DEPENDENCE on Christ!
- The believer lives in the flesh, BUT NOT AFTER the flesh!
LIVES BY FAITH!
- FAITH which is FASTENED ON THE CHRIST who gave himself for us!
- To believe in CHRIST CRUCIFIED is to ALSO believe that WE WERE CRUCIFIED WITH HIM.
- When Christ died WE ALSO DIED WITH HIM.
- WE – I – WAS CRUCIFIED WITH HIM.
- THIS WE ARE TO KNOW this THOROUGHLY and TO WALK RECKONING (calculating) IT TO BE SO.
- That WE WERE crucified WITH Christ when he was crucified.
- WE WERE UNITED WITH HIM IN DEATH and RESURRECTION.
Gal 2:20-21: Here, in his own person, the apostle describes the spiritual or hidden life of a believer. The old man is crucified,
Rom 6:6 -7 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7 because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. NIV
Rom 6:6 And we know that our old being has been put to death with Christ on his cross, in order that the power of the sinful self might be destroyed, so that we should no longer be the slaves of sin. TEV
Romans 6:6, but the new man is living; sin is mortified, and grace is quickened. He has the comforts and the triumphs of grace; yet that grace is not from himself, but from another. Believers see themselves living in a state of dependence on Christ. Hence it is, that though he lives in the flesh, yet he does not live after the flesh. Those who have true faith, live by that faith; AND FAITH FASTENS UPON CHRIST’S GIVING HIMSELF FOR US. He loved me, and gave himself for me.
As if the apostle said, The Lord saw me fleeing from him more and more. Such wickedness, error, and ignorance were in my will and understanding, that it was not possible for me to be ransomed by any other means than by such a price.
Consider well this price. Here notice the false faith of many. And their profession is accordingly; they have the form of godliness without the power of it. They think they believe the articles of faith aright, but they are deceived. For to believe in Christ crucified, is not only to believe that he was crucified, but also to believe that I am crucified with him. And this is to know Christ crucified. Hence we learn what is the nature of grace. God’s grace cannot stand with man’s merit. Grace is no grace unless it is freely given every way. The more simply the believer relies on Christ for every thing, the more devotedly does he walk before Him in all his ordinances and commandments. Christ lives and reigns in him, and he lives here on earth by faith in the Son of God, which works by love, causes obedience, and changes into his holy image. Thus he neither abuses the grace of God, nor makes it in vain.
- We were PLACED IN CHRIST when we are born again by the Spirit of God.
- We have changed our parents.
- ADAM was previously OUR LEGAL HEAD, the head of the OLD creation man.
- BUT NOW JESUS is now OUR LEGAL HEAD, THE HEAD of the NEW CREATION MAN
- This is something that JESUS DID FOR US and NOT something WE DO ourselves.
1 Cor 12:13(NKJ) For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body— whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free– and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.
John 3:5 (NIV) Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.
BUT WE ARE IN CHRIST BECAUSE OF CHRIST’S WORK ON THE CROSS.
GOD’S POWER PLACED US IN CHRIST.
1 Cor 1:30 (NIV) It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God– that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.
FIRSTLY LET US LOOK AT THESE TWO MEN
ADAM CHRIST
FIRST ADAM LAST ADAM 1 Cor. 15:45
FIRST MAN SECOND MAN verse 47
MADE A LIVING SOUL A LIFE-GIVING SPIRIT verse 45
NATURAL SPIRITUAL verse 46
EARTHLY HEAVENLY verse 47-49
1 Cor 15:45-49 NIV 45 So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. 46 The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. 47 The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. 48 As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the man from heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. 49 And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of the man from heaven.
1 Cor 15:45-49 NLT 45 The Scriptures tell us, “The first man, Adam, became a living person.” But the last Adam — that is, Christ — is a life-giving Spirit. 46 What came first was the natural body, then the spiritual body comes later. 47 Adam, the first man, was made from the dust of the earth, while Christ, the second man, came from heaven. 48 Every human being has an earthly body just like Adam’s, but our heavenly bodies will be just like Christ’s. 49 Just as we are now like Adam, the man of the earth, so we will someday be like Christ, the man from heaven.
Now let us see what it means to be IN ADAM and IN CHRIST
A MAN IN ADAM
Rom 5:1-20 NKJV 1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance;4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope.5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die.8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned 13(For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.15 But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many.16 And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification.17 For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)18 Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life.19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more,21 so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

15. Complete in Jesus Christ- Col 2:10 NKJV and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.
Col 2:10 TEV and you have been given full life in union with him. He is supreme over every spiritual ruler and authority.
Col 2:10 NIV and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority.
‘MAN’ IN ADAM
REMEMBER THE WORDS OF JESUS:
That which is born of the flesh (in Adam) is flesh; and that which is born the Spirit (in Christ) is spirit. – John 3:6
You cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven except you be born again.
Man must be born again – born of the Spirit of God – must have A NEW BIRTH
MAN IN ADAM BY NATURAL BIRTH
A man may be well educated, a respectable person in the community, a person of noble birth, a good worker for the church or mission, YET without the new birth HE IS STILL IN ADAM
A person may be well mannered and honest, have a hunger for religious things, be very devout and sincere, but is without the new birth THEN HE IS STILL IN ADAM
No matter how a man may act or conduct himself, unless he is born again by the Spirit of God, HE IS STILL IN ADAM.
- MAN SINS, BECAUSE HE IS A SINNER
- HE IS A SINNER BECAUSE HE IS IN ADAM.
- MAN IS NOT A SINNER BECAUSE HE SINS.
He is a sinner because he was MADE A SINNER
WHEN ADAM SINNED.
WE WERE MADE SINNERS THROUGH ADAM’S SIN.
THROUGH THIS ONE MAN’S DISOBEDIENCE (ADAM) WE WERE ALL MADE SINNERS.
- Rom 5:19 TEV And just as all people were made sinners as the result of the disobedience of one man, in the same way they will all be put right with God as the result of the obedience of the one man.
- Rom 5:19 NIV For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
- Rom 5:15-16 TEV “It is true that many people died because of the sin of that one man………”
- Rom 5:15-16 NIV “……. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man,…”
Constituted sinners through Adam’s transgression
Rom 5:16-19 NIV 16 “Again, the gift of God is not like the result of the one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation,…….”
Judgement & condemnation followed as a result
17 “For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man,…..”
Death reigned because of this one man’s disobedience
18 Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men,…..”
Consequently ALL MANKIND is condemned
19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, …..”
Many were made sinners – because of this one man’s disobedience – Adam
ROMANS 5:12-21
Rom 5:12 NIV Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned—
AS we look closer at this chapter we see some very important things.
- In verse 12 we are directed TO ONE MAN’S ACTIONS which affected us all. That man was ADAM.
- In this chapter we are not looking at what WE have done, BUT – What this ONE MAN has done.
- It is not the sins that we have committed, BUT THIS ONE MAN’S SIN that we are looking at.
- We are looking back to WHAT ADAM DID which made us sinners, INSTEAD of looking at OUR OWN SINS.
- It is not our own wrong doings (sins) that made us sinners – IT WAS ADAM’S SIN that did that.
- We sin BECAUSE we ARE SINNERS – ALREADY BORN SINNERS
WE WERE MADE SINNERS BY ONE MAN’S DEED, AND NOT BY OUR OWN DEEDS.
Romans 5:19
- Romans 3:23 and Romans 5:12 are both translated, “All have sinned” in the Authorized Version of the Bible. Now this is true – that all of us have sinned.
- However in both of these references the Greek translation into English should be “All sinned” (as in the Revised Standard Version – Romans 5:12)
- If we leave “have” in, as the Authorized Version has, our attention is directed only to ourselves and the things that we have done wrong against God.
- BUT if we take out the word “have” and leave it as “all sinned”, then our attention is correctly directed to this ONE MAN who acted in our behalf, and through his sin we all sinned (“in Adam”). (“Acting in our behalf” simply means acting in our place)
Let us look again at these verses in Romans 5 and see the clear teaching of them in regard to Adam’s transgression against God constituted us all to be sinners
VERSE
- 12 – By ONE man SIN entered into the world.
- 12 – By THAT ACT, DEATH passed (came) upon ALL men.
- 14 – By THAT ACT, DEATH reigned (as king)
- 15 – By THE OFFENCE of ONE, MANY be dead (many died)
- 16 – By ONE (Adam) judgement came into condemnation.
“For the judgment upon that ONE MAN’S sin led to condemnation”.
(Weymouth Translation)
- 17 – By ONE MAN’S OFFENCE, DEATH reigned (as king) by ONE.
- 18 – By THE OFFENCE OF ONE, JUDGMENT came upon ALL men unto condemnation.
- 19 – By ONE MAN’S DISOBEDIENCE MANY were made sinners.
So we see clearly that we were made sinners by an act of another (Adam) apart from ourselves.
Adam made us sinners – NOT we ourselves.
MAN IN CHRIST BY NEW BIRTH
Our conduct does not change us from being in Adam Neither does our conduct put us in Christ.
WE ARE PLACED CHRIST BY GOD, THROUGH THE NEW BIRTH.
As in Adam, SO also in Christ (1 Corinthians 15:22)
Just as Romans 5 tells us how we came to be IN ADAM, and how through his transgression we were made sinners, so we are told of how we came to be IN CHRIST, and through this ONE Man’s obedience we were made RIGHTEOUS.
VERSE
- 15 – The grace of God and the free gift … which is by ONE (Jesus Christ) abounds unto MANY.
- 16 – Free gift unto justification (declaring to be in right standing before God).
- 17 – ……..received the gift of righteousness, and the abundance of grace, shall reign (as a KING) IN LIFE, by the ONE (Jesus Christ).
- 18 – Justification of life by that ONE.
- 19 – MANY made RIGHTEOUS.
Here we see that through this ONE MAN’S ACT, Jesus Christ (acting on our behalf) has MADE US RIGHTEOUS (in right standing before God).
WE ARE MADE RIGHTEOUS BY CHRIST’S ACT (That means by His work on Calvary)
What a wonderful truth this is – that we are not made righteous by the law, but through the work of Jesus Christ. So many are trying to be holy and righteous in the sight of God, but they are trying and working for it. they are trying to keep the law.
GOD SAYS THAT JUST AS YOU WERE MADE SINNERS BY SOMEONE ACTING ON YOUR BEHALF, SO YOU ARE MADE RIGHTEOUS BY SOMEONE ACTING ON YOUR BEHALF. that ONE being Jesus Christ.
As in Adam all die – so in Christ all live (1 Corinthians 15:22)
Let us all see this wonderful truth in God’s Word, and confess it to be so – confess it because God says it is so. The devil likes to condemn us and accuse us before God as he did to Job. Our answer to the devil’s accusations is the same as the answer that Jesus gave to him on the mount:
IT IS WRITTEN
It is written that I am righteous because of Jesus acting on my behalf.
